Crabs Top Two Hitters Headed South of the Border

Waldorf, MD - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs announced today that the contracts of third baseman Travis Garcia and first baseman Ryan Mulhern have been purchased by the Saltillo Sarape Makers of the Mexican League.

The move provides a crushing blow to the Blue Crabs' offense as Garcia and Mulhern each led the League in homers with 10 apiece. Garcia, a four-year Southern Maryland veteran, leaves with a .300 batting average and 24 RBI. He was also third in the League in slugging percentage (.609) and total bases (67). Furthermore, he was fifth in runs scored with 24.

Mulhern leaves having hit .348 with 34 RBI, however he had been a one-man wrecking crew since May 13. He was batting .451 (29-66) with nine homers and 30 RBI over a span of 18 games and raised his average from .233 to .348 in the process.

The Burbank, CA native, who was in his first season with Southern Maryland, was fourth in the Atlantic League in batting average (.348) and first in RBI (34) and total bases (84) at the time of his departure.

The Blue Crabs return home to begin a six-game home stand tonight with the Bridgeport Bluefish. The Blue Crabs will send righty Brian Slocum (1-0, 1.80 ERA) to the mound against fellow-righty Miguel Mejia (1-2, 4.95 ERA). The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
