Norfolk Tides News Release

Chris Basak hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th inning, giving the Tides a 3-2 win over the Toledo Mud Hens Friday night from Harbor Park.

The win gave Norfolk a split of their four-game series with the Mud Hens, and was the third walk-off win for the Tides during their current ten-game homestand.

With the score tied 2-2 entering the 9th, Norfolk took advantage of some sloppy fielding by the Mud Hens to pull out the victory. Victor Diaz led off the ninth with a ground ball off Toledo reliever Chris Spurling (0-1), but shortstop Don Kelly's throw was in the dirt at first, allowing Diaz to reach safely. Pinch-hitter Anderson Hernandez then layed down a sacrifice bunt in front of the plate that catcher Max St. Pierre threw wildly to first, putting runners on first and second with nobody out. On the next pitch from Spurling, Basak showed bunt but pulled the bat back, lining a ground ball down the left field line to score Diaz and give Norfolk the win.

Steve Schmoll (1-1) picked up the victory in relief for Norfolk, retiring all seven batters he faced. The 26-year-old right-hander has allowed just two earned runs in his last 13 outings, posting a 0.93 ERA over that stretch.

Tides starter Evan MacLane battled through 6.2 innings, yielding just two runs despite giving up a season-high ten hits. MacLane walked three and struck out three.

Lastings Milledge was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored in the game, while Jose Offerman helped the Tides offense with a single and two runs driven in.

The Tides will finish up the homestand by welcoming the Richmond Braves to town Saturday night for a two game series. Southpaw Jeriome Robertson (0-1, 4.50) is slated to take the hill for the Tides against Richmond right-hander Travis Smith (3-1, 2.91). Game time from Harbor Park is set for 7:15 p.m.
