Gwinnett Stripers News Release

NORFOLK, VA. - A good pitching performance from Gwinnett Braves' starter Yohan Flande was overshadowed by a great pitching performance by the Norfolk Tides righty Zach Clark, as Norfolk defeated the G-Braves 4-0 Friday night at Harbor Park. With the loss, Gwinnett has now lost seven straight games with three to play in the 2012 regular season.

Flande (L, 6-11) pitched into and out of trouble for much of his 6.2 innings on Friday, as he finished the night yielding one run on seven hits. The lone run was a solo home run off the bat of Jamie Hoffman in the 5th inning. The left-hander also struck out six Tides, while he walked two others.

The night belonged to Clark (W, 5-2) who went 9.0 innings for the complete game shutout victory, giving up just three hits and no walks, while striking out five G-Braves. The complete game performance was the third thrown against Gwinnett in their last seven games. John Lannan and Jeff Mandel each threw complete game shutouts in back-to-back starts with Syracuse at Coolray Field this week.

The G-Braves had some chances early, but could not capitalize offensively. Terry Tiffee missed a home run by about four feet, as he banged a double off the center field wall in the 2nd inning, but was left stranded to end the frame. Ernesto Mejia added a double in the fourth inning, but was also left on base.

The only other G-Brave hit belonged to Jose Yepez, a single in the fifth inning. It was the last baserunner Gwinnett would have as Clark set down the final 14 batters of the game, en route to the win.

The Tides touched up Gwinnett right-hander Buddy Carlyle, who relieved Flande. Carlyle allowed three runs on three hits in just 0.2 innings of work. The last two runs allowed scored after Carlyle was out of the game, as Dusty Hughes relieved Carlyle, allowing two of his inherited runners to score. Hughes's final line was 1.0 inning pitched, surrendering no runs on one hit, while he walked two and struck out none. The G-Braves have now lost 7 games in a row.

Joe Mahoney led the way for Norfolk, going 3-for-3 with a RBI against Gwinnett pitching. Jaime Hoffman, Ryan Adams and Ronny Paulino all recorded multiple-hit nights for the Tides.

The Gwinnett Braves (61-80) face the Norfolk Tides (72-69) in the second game of their final four-game series of the season. G-Braves left-hander Daniel Rodriguez (0-0, 0.00) will make the start against Norfolk left-hander Dana Eveland (5-5, 2.17), with first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m. from Harbor Park. Listen to Judd Hickinbotham and the radio broadcast on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM in Gainesville, GA.
