Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indians catcher Tony Sanchez went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored on Friday night, leading the Indianapolis offense to a 6-1 shellacking of the Toledo Mud Hens at Victory Field as 2012 Tribe MVP Rick VandenHurk picked up his 13th win of the season in front of 11,126 fans.

In the fourth game of a five-game home-and-home series -- the first at Victory Field -- Sanchez scored the first run of the game for the Tribe, leading off the bottom of the third with a double to right-center field before scoring on DH Eric Fryer's one-out single. After Fryer was forced out on a fielders choice, SS Brock Holt stole second and scored on a single by 2B Anderson Hernandez to put Indianapolis up 2-0.

The Indians then tripled their lead in the fourth inning. After a throwing error, a single by newcomer 3B Hector Luna and a walk by CF Brandon Boggs loaded the bases with none out, Sanchez launched a nearly-identical double to right-center to drive in RF Dallas McPherson and Luna. LF Christian Marrero then drove in both Boggs and Sanchez with a single to center field to put the Indians up 6-0.

Given plenty of run support, VandenHurk proved why he was named the Tribe's 2012 Most Valuable Player with six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and no walks while recording six strikeouts. VandenHurk (6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K) picked up his 13th win of the season, at the time moving him into sole possession of second place in the International League.

The Mud Hens finally broke through for a single run in the eighth inning against RHP Daniel McCutchen (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) when CF Justin Henry squeaked a groundball single into right field off the glove off the diving second baseman, allowing SS Argenis Diaz to score. RHP Evan Meek (1.0 IP) tossed a perfect ninth to close out the win.

Toledo starter Luke Putkonen (3.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) suffered the loss to fall to 3-3 on the season after surrendering six runs (five earned) on six hits over just 3.2 innings of work. Following Putkonen, Mud Hens relievers Andy Oliver (2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 SO), Jose Ortega (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) and Zach Miner (1.0 IP, 2 SO) combined for 4.1 innings of scoreless relief in a losing effort.

The Indians and Mud Hens will wrap up the five-game home-and-home on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. in the Tribe's regular season home finale. While Indianapolis has yet to officially announce a projected starter, Toledo is expected to send LHP Casey Crosby (7-8, 3.77) to the mound.

The contest will be televised on HTSN (Hometown Sports and News), available via cable or over-the-air on digital channel 6.2. The game will also be carried on WNDE 1260 AM-WFBQ-HD2, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 5:45 p.m.
