Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, extended their winning streak to four games with a 5-2 victory over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Friday night from Coca-Cola Park. Syracuse scored all five of its runs in the first and second innings and concluded a nine-game road trip with a 6-3 record.

Syracuse (69-72) got going offensively right away against IronPigs starter Tyson Brummett. In the first inning, Corey Brown singled and moved to second base on a Josh Johnson sacrifice bunt. Mark Teahen then lashed a double down the left-field line, giving the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Carlos Rivero followed that with a double into the right-center field gap, and the Chiefs had two runs at the end of a half-inning.

In the second inning, the Chiefs put the game on ice. After a one-out double by Brett Carroll, starting pitcher Jeff Mandel helped out his own cause with a line-drive single down the left-field line. Mandel's second RBI of the season put Syracuse in front by three runs, and three batters later, Teahen extended it to five. The first baseman singled to center field, driving in Mandel and Brown for a 5-0 lead.

Lehigh Valley (74-67) would tack on a pair of runs later in the game on solo home runs. In the second inning, Andres Blanco took Mandel deep over the right-field wall, cutting the lead to 5-1.

From there on out, though, Mandel wouldn't allow another run. He earned the win, tossing seven innings of six-hit, one-run ball. The right-hander walked just one and struck out six in his final Chiefs appearance of the season.

The IronPigs tacked on a solo home run by Jason Pridie off Erik Arnesen in the eighth inning, but it wouldn't be enough. Right-hander Christian Garcia tossed a perfect ninth inning to earn his 13th save in 13 chances with Syracuse this year.

The Chiefs return to Syracuse on Saturday for their final home series of the season, beginning a three-game, two-city set with Rochester at 7:00. Right-hander Tanner Roark is slated to take the bump for the Chiefs.
