Norfolk Tides News Release

Brandon Snyder homered and Rick VandenHurk tossed seven strong innings as the Tides topped Indianapolis 4-1 Monday night at Harbor Park.

Norfolk jumped out to an early lead off of Indians starter Mike Crotta (5-6), as Craig Tatum lined a two-out, two-run triple to left-center field in the second inning to get the Tides on the board.

The Indians pulled within 2-1 on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Melillo in the third, but Snyder launched a two-run shot over the 396 foot sign in left-center field one inning later to extend Norfolk's lead to 4-1.

The four runs were more than enough for VandenHurk (1-0), who picked up the win in his Tides debut after he was obtained in a trade with the Marlins organization on Saturday. The 25-year-old allowed just one run on four hits in seven strong innings, walking one and striking out four.

Over his last five starts, VandenHurk has now gone 5-0 with a 1.32 ERA (5-ER, 34.0-IP).

The Indians brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning against Tides closer Dennis Sarfate, but Sarfate struck out Ryan Doumit and Jim Negrych swinging to end the threat and register his 14th save of the season.

The Tides will go for their first four-game winning streak of the season on Tuesday afternoon, as Chris Tillman (8-6, 3.40) takes the hill for Norfolk against Indy right-hander Jeremy Powell (7-7, 4.79). First pitch is slated for 12:15.
