G-Braves Outlast Mud Hens, 6-4

The Gwinnett Braves outlasted the Toledo Mud Hens 6-4 in the third game of their four game series on Monday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. G-Braves starter Brandon Beachy won his first Triple-A start, helping the team to a 2-1 series lead. The G-Braves (52-57) pulled within 16.0 games behind International League South leaders Durham in third place, and 7.0 games of Wild Card-leaders Louisville. Toledo (54-56), in the bottom of their division, are 12.0 games behind IL West leaders Columbus.

It Was Over When: G-Braves Wes Timmons and Joe Thurston both scored in the 1st inning, setting a trend for offensive sparks from those two that would continue through the duration. Timmons homered in his next at-bat in the 3rd inning, while Thurston knocked one out in his 7th inning at-bat.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: RHP Beachy (1-0) went 6.0 IP and allowed just 1 R/ER on 5 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 5 batters. RHP reliever Stephen Marek's season-high scoreless innings streak ended at 25.1 IP in abrupt fashion as he gave up back-to-back homers in the 8th inning. Closer Craig Kimbrel earned his 15th save of the season with a scoreless 9th inning.

At the plate: Timmons finished 1-for-2 with the HR (6), 2 RBI, 2 R and 2 BB. Thurston ended up 1-for-5 with a HR, 2 RBI and 2 R scored. New G-Brave Willie Cabrera got his first RBI, going 1-for-4.

The opposition:

On the Mound: Toledo LHP Andy Oliver (1-1) also went 6.0 IP but allowed 4 R/3 ER and 5 walks, while striking out 4 batters.

At the plate: Right fielder Ben Guez was 2-for-4 with a HR, an RBI and a stolen base, while center fielder Casper Wells finished 2-for-3 with a HR and an RBI.

On Deck: Gwinnett ends their season long 12-day, 12-game homestand tomorrow night with the final game of the set against Toledo at 7:05 p.m. The G-Braves will send LHP Scott Diamond (1-0, 3.94 ERA) to the bump against RHP L.J. Gagnier (4-5, 3.66 ERA) for the Mud Hens. The game will be broadcast on the radio at WDUN-550 AM.
