TODAY'S GAME: Tonight, the Buffalo Bisons face the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in the third game of a four-game series at Coca-Cola Field (7:05 p.m.). The Herd has the 2-0 lead thanks to a 2-1 walk-off victory over the IronPigs, last night in ten innings. Buffalo now has a 31-21 record at Coca-Cola Field this season. After an off day on Wednesday, the Bisons continue their eight-game homestand with four games against Columbus, August 5-8.
vs. IRONPIGS: The Bisons are 6-4 against the IronPigs this year. Prior to this series, the teams split four-game sets in Lehigh Valley, May 22-25, and in Buffalo, June 12-15. Dating back to 2009, the Bisons have now won seven of their last nine games against the IronPigs at Coca-Cola Field.
GOLLY GEE: RHP DILLON GEE leads the Bisons with 118 strikeouts this season, which is also good for third in the International League. With a month still left, the total is already the fourth-most in a single season by a Buffalo hurler and highest in 20 years. The currently record holder, RHP VICENTE PALACIOS fanned 137 batters during the 1990 season. Gee is just 19 strikeouts from the record and has posted 27 strikeouts in his last four starts.
NICK THE STICK: INF NICK EVANS had three hits last night, including the game-winning RBI-single in the bottom of the 10th inning. The slugger has six hits in his first three games since joining the Bisons on Friday after a great season at Double-A Binghamton. With the B-Mets, Evans ranked in the Eastern League Top-5 in doubles (30), home runs (17) and extra-base hits (47) to go along with a .294 average in 88 games.
BULLY FOR THE PEN: The Bisons bullpen combined to toss 6.1 innings of shutout baseball last night. RHP RYOTA IGARASHI worked two frames to earn his first victory with the team. RHP JOSE DE LA TORRE (1.1IP), LHP MIKE O'CONNOR (2.0IP) and RHP CHAD CORDERO (1.0IP) also kept Lehigh Valley off the scoreboard long enough for the 2-1 Bisons win.
F-MART: OF FERNANDO MARTINEZ homered in yesterday's game before winning the team's annual HR Derby after the contest. Martinez now has 12 blasts on the season, third most on the club. Martinez has hit in five straight games, averaging .500 (9-18) with two doubles, two homers and three RBI.
METS UPDATE: The Mets (53-52) lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday, 14-1, from Citi Field. Former Bisons INF IKE DAVIS went 1-3 with the only RBI for the club. New York will now begin a pivotal six-game road swing against divisional foes, Atlanta and Philadelphia. The Mets face the Braves tonight at 7:10 p.m.
