International League Players of The Week
Published on August 2, 2010 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Louisville first baseman Yonder Alonso and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitcher Tim Redding have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from July 26-August 1. Alonso is the fourth member of the Bats to win an IL weekly award this season, following Juan Francisco (May 3-9), Luis Terrero (May 10-16), and Sam LeCure (May 17-23). Redding is the second SWB Yankees player to be so honored this season, joining two-time Pitcher of the Week Jonathan Albaladejo.
Yonder Alonso helped his red hot Louisville Bats to victories in each of the team's six games this week, as he led the International League with a .480 batting average, 12 hits, and a .960 slugging percentage. He was 2nd in the League with a .552 on-base percentage and 4 doubles, and tied for 3rd with 2 home runs. Alonso and his teammates set the tone for the week on Monday, as they exploded for 19 runs in the series opener against Charlotte (with Alonso going 4-6 with a double, RBI, and two runs scored). The next night he put the Bats ahead for good with a solo homer in the 7th inning of a 7-5 victory. When the division-leading Columbus Clippers came to town over the weekend, Alonso continued his hot hitting. He drove in four runs in the 10-2 win Saturday night, collecting two doubles and a home run. His 11th and 12th hit of the week came yesterday in another Bats win, giving the team ten in a row. Louisville currently leads the Wild Card race by 3.0 games over Syracuse.
23-year-old Yonder Alonso is in his third season of professional baseball. Widely considered one of baseball's top prospects, Alonso was drafted by the Reds in 2008 out of the University of Miami. Alonso is a native of Havana, Cuba.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre right-hander Tim Redding was terrific in two starts this week, winning both outings and allowing just one run and 9 hits while leading the IL with 16.1 innings pitched and 16 strikeouts. Monday at Rochester, he shut out the Red Wings for 8.0 innings, scattering five hits and striking out eight in a 3-0 victory. Back at home Saturday night in a big matchup against 2nd place Syracuse, Redding continued his dominance. He surrendered just four hits in 8.1 innings, including a solo homer to Leonard Davis which represented the only run scored against him all week. Redding once again recorded eight strikeouts in a performance he dedicated to his teammate Reegie Corona, whose season came to an end due to a broken arm on the final play of Friday's game. The Yankees now lead the IL North by 7.0 games over Syracuse.
32-year-old Tim Redding is in his 13th season of professional baseball. He is a veteran of 184 games in the Major Leagues with the Astros, Padres, Yankees, Nationals, and Mets. He began the 2010 season in the Colorado organization, but was released in May and signed by the Yankees as a free agent. Redding is a native of Rochester, New York.
