Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees scored a run in the ninth to pick up a 6-5 win over the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, Monday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. The loss drops the Chiefs eight games behind the Yankees for first place in the IL North.
After trading runs in the eighth, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre took the lead for good against Ron Villone in the ninth. With one out, Chad Moeller narrowly missed a home run, settling for a double off the top of the centerfield wall. In the next at bat, Kevin Russo sent a double over Leonard Davis's head in left field. Moeller jogged home on the play with what ended up being the game's winning run.
Jonathan Albaladejo finished the Chiefs off in the ninth for his 36th save in 37 opportunities.
Syracuse touched up Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter David Phelps for two runs in the first to take the early lead. Boomer Whiting began the inning with a double down the left field line. He raced home for the Chiefs' first run of the night on Jason Botts' sac fly to left later in the frame. Wilson Ramos contributed with his 3rd RBI in two days for the Chiefs, singling home Chase Lambin with two outs.
The Yankees tallied their first run of the game in the top half of the second. Brandon Laird slammed Jason Marquis's pitch over the right field wall on his first swing in Triple-A. Laird went 4-4 for two longballs in his Yankees debut.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tied the score an inning later to make it 2-2. The run came across when Luis Ordaz's throw to first base eluded Botts at first base. The ball rolled into foul territory, allowing Kevin Russo to score easily from second. It was Ordaz's first error of the season.
The Chiefs used a pair of hits to go ahead 3-2 in the third. Whiting poked a single over the head of Laird at third base for his second hit. After Whiting advanced from second to third on Phelps's throwing error, Botts plopped a single into left field. The hit scored Whiting and it gave Botts his 37th RBI.
Romulo Sanchez pitched two innings and earned the win for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He gave up three hits and let in one run.
Villone lost for the fourth time for the Chiefs. He gave up two hits and an earned run in one inning of work.
Major league rehabber Jason Marquis tossed six innings for Syracuse. He surrendered three hits and two runs (one earned). He struck out four and walked a pair.
Phelps allowed six hits and four runs (three earned) in the no-decision for the Yankees.
The Chiefs conclude their home and home with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Tuesday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Matt Chico (5-5, 3.64) will be on the mound for Syracuse against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's Jason Hirsh (6-7, 4.22). First pitch will be at 7:10.
