Norfolk Tides News Release

Mike Cervenak homered and Andy Mitchell threw five scoreless innings, lifting the Tides to a 1-0 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in game two of a doubleheader Tuesday night. In the first game, Scranton knocked off the Tides 2-1.

Cervenak hit his team-leading 6th home run in the 4th inning, a long drive just inside the left field line. It was enough run support for Mitchell (3-2), who allowed just four hits in five shutout innings to pick up his team-leading 3rd win of the year.

Nick McCurdy followed Mitchell with a scoreless 6th inning, and Cory Doyne shut the door with a scoreless 7th to pick up his 9th save of the season. Doyne has now recorded a save in back-to-back-back days, and ranks second in the league with nine saves this season.

In game one, Norfolk starter Jim Johnson (1-3) pitched well, but Kevin Thompson's RBI double in the 4th inning was enough to give the Yankees the win.

Johnson lowered his ERA to 3.06 by allowing two runs - one earned - on six hits in six innings of work as he earned Norfolk's first complete game of 2007. In his six starts with Norfolk this season, the Tides have scored just 19 runs, an average of 3.17 runs a game.

The Tides were the visiting team in game one, even though the game was played at Harbor Park. The game was a makeup of a game that was postponed in Scranton on April 8, and the Yankees played the contest as the home team.

Colter Bean (1-0) picked up the win for Scranton by allowing one run in 5.1 innings, while Jim Brower earned the save.

Cervenak drove home the Tides' lone run with a double in the first inning, while newcomer Tike Redman belted a triple for his first hit in a Norfolk uniform.

Norfolk and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre square off again on Wednesday night from Harbor Park, with right-hander Rob Bell (1-1, 2.50) set to take the hill against former Tide Eric Junge (NR). First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
