Christian Walker homered and Dariel Alvarez extended his hitting streak but the Tides couldn't overcome an early deficit in a 6-2 loss to the Toledo Mud Hens Sunday night at Harbor Park.

Walker, the #3 prospect in the Orioles system according to Baseball America, belted a solo shot in the sixth inning for his 15th home run of the season. It was the 10th home run since the All-Star break for the University of South Carolina product, tops among all players in the International League. The 24-year-old first baseman also has 32 runs batted in since the break, second-most in the IL.

Alvarez singled in the first frame to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, tying the longest stretch by a Norfolk player this season. Over that 12-game span, Alvarez has hit .378 (17-45) with a home run, four RBI and nine runs scored. The 26-year-old also ranks second in the IL this season with 157 hits.

Norfolk starter Eddie Gamboa struggled early on, as he took the loss to drop to 8-10 this season. The 30-year-old knuckleballer trailed 5-0 after three innings before settling down to shutout the Hens without a hit over his final three frames of work. Overall, he yielded five runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks while striking out five.

Josh Wilson homered and drove in three to pace Toledo, while Dixon Machado added two hits and two runs scored.

With the loss, the Tides fell to 1-5 on the current homestand and have dropped consecutive series for just the second time this season. Norfolk owns a 2.5 game lead over the Gwinnett Braves in the IL South division with 15 games to play.

After the final off day of the season Monday, Norfolk welcomes the Durham Bulls to Harbor Park on Tuesday night for the start of a two-game set. Terry Doyle (2-1, 2.96) gets the start for the Tides against left-hander Blake Snell (4-2, 1.53), with first pitch set for 7:05.
