Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk rallied with a run in the bottom of the 9th, but could not push the tying run accross as they fell to the Richmond Braves 2-1 Thursday night from Harbor Park.

With one out in the final frame, Mike Cervenak singled to left off of Richmond reliever Jeff Bennett to start Norfolk's rally. After Bennett retired Jon Knott on a deep fly to right for the second out of the inning, Jason Dubois kept the rally alive with a single to right field. Ruddy Yan was brought in to pinch-run for Dubois, and Terry Tiffee followed with a line drive single to center which scored Cervenak to bring the Tides within one. Bennett ended the threat, however, by retiring Cesar Crespo on a broken bat groundout to first base to give the Braves the win in the first game of a four-game set.

Willie Harris went 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Richmond offense, driving in a run with a single in the 5th inning off of Tides starter Jon Leicester (0-2). Barbaro Canizares added two hits and an RBI for Richmond, as the Braves improved to 12-5 this year.

Leicester pitched well, but took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits in 5.0 innings of work. He walked two and struck out three.

The Tides and Braves will square off again on Friday night, with first pitch set for 7:30. Right-hander Tim Kester (1-1, 3.86) is slated to take the hill for Norfolk against Richmond righty Anthony Lerew (0-0, 2.84).
