Tides Blow Five-Run Lead, Fall to Rochester

July 19, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

The Rochester Red Wings rallied from an early five-run deficit to knock off the Tides 14-8 Thursday afternoon at Harbor Park.

The Red Wings collected 18 hits in the contest, as every batter had a hit, eight batters had an RBI and seven batters scored a run. The 18 hits surrendered by the Tides represented a season-high, while the 14 runs tied the most yielded by the Tides in game this season.

Tides starter Jason Berken entered the contest ranked 8th in the IL with a 3.28 ERA, but saw that ERA balloon to 3.80 after yielding seven runs on nine hits in four-plus innings. Berken took the mound in the fifth inning with a 7-2 lead, but he yielded five straight hits to begin the frame - all of which came around to score.

Berken walked two and struck out three in the outing as he threw 103 pitches, 66 for strikes.

After knotting the game with five runs in the fifth, the Red Wings plated five more in the sixth against Oscar Villarreal (3-3). Villarreal, who had not allowed more than one earned run in any appearance this season, allowed five runs on six hits in his two innings of work.

Brandon Waring hit a solo homer as part of a three-hit day to lead Norfolk's offense, while Carlos Rojas added three hits and two runs batted in. Rojas also pitched two innings in the contest, as Norfolk's bullpen was depleted due to recent spot starts and a 15-inning contest Wednesday night.

Lew Ford and Blake Davis each had two hits apiece for Norfolk, which wrapped up its eight-game homestand with a 5-3 record.

The Tides open up an eight-game road trip Friday as they begin a four-game series in Syracuse against the Chiefs. Brian Matusz (1-0, 1.69) is slated to take the hill for Norfolk against left-hander Zach Duke (10-4, 3.78).
