Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Rochester, NY - Sometimes hustle plays go a long way to determining the outcome of a ballgame. Chris Dickerson proved this theory when he hustled to second ahead of a throw in what looked to be a routine double play. Dickerson kept the inning alive and scored later in the inning proving to be the difference in the Yankees 2-0 victory in the series finale of a four game series with the Charlotte Knights at Frontier Field on Thursday afternoon

The Yankees took a 1-0 advantage in home half of the third thanks to some timely hitting and superior hustle from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre centerfielder Dickerson. Francisco Cervelli bounced a grounder to shortstop, which looked as if it would be a sure double play. However, Dickerson hustled into second ahead of the throw to keep the inning alive. Brandon Laird then brought Dickerson home with a line drive RBI single to left. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added another run in the top half of the fifth when Corban Joseph sent a sacrifice fly out to right field, plating Dickerson from third and extending the Yankee lead to 2-0.

Matt Zaleski suffered the loss for Charlotte allowing two runs on eight hits, while walking four and striking out four over five innings on the mound for the Knights. D.J. Mitchell picked up the win for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in relief of spot starter Mike O'Connor. Mitchell tossed 5.0 innings of shutout baseball allowing just four hits, while striking out five and walking one. O'Connor tossed four terrific innings in a rare start, allowing just three hits and striking out five. With the victory the Yankees and Knights split the first series of the year.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre travels to Gwinnett, Georgia early tomorrow morning to begin a four game series against the Braves at Coolray Field. Right-hander John Maine (3-3, 6.28) gets the nod for the Yankees, while Jose Lugo (2-5, 5.02) heads to the hill for the Braves. In the only previous meeting with Atlanta's triple-A affiliate the Yankees completed a four game sweep as the home team at Frontier Field. Following the series with the Braves the Yankees continue their southern road trip with four games against the Charlotte Knights at Knights Stadium.
