NORFOLK MUSIC TO MY EARS: The Rochester Red Wings today close out their 4-game series at Norfolk (Orioles), looking for a series victory after winning 2 of the first 3 games. The 8-game roadtrip continues tomorrow with the start of a 4-game set at Durham (Rays). Rochester returns to Frontier Field on Tuesday for a brief 4-game homestand against International League North Division rival Syracuse (Nationals).
a The Red Wings are 3 games into a stretch of playing 16 of 20 games on the road through August 5. Rochester will, however, play 18 of its final 29 games at Frontier Field beginning August 6.
A .500 TEAM!!: At 49-49, the Red Wings have reached the .500 plateau for the first time since being 9-9 going into an April 26 doubleheader vs. Syracuse. A win today would make Rochester a winning ballclub for the first time since being 9-8 after an April 22 win vs. Lehigh Valley (Phillies).
a Since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28, the Red Wings are 29-19.
a Rochester is 35-26 beginning May 15 after opening the season 14-23. The Wings are also 40-33 beginning May 3, playing better than .500 baseball for more than half the season.
CAN'T LIE ABOUT JULY: The Red Wings have won 2 in a row, 6 of their last 7, and 10 of their last 12. Rochester is 12-4 in July, 1.5 games ahead of Norfolk for the best record in the IL during the month. The Top 5 teams in July:
Rank Team Record
1. 12-4
2. 0 10-5
3. Buffalo (Mets) 9-6
Gwinnett (Braves) 9-6
5. Indianapolis (Pirates) 9-7
a The Red Wings are tied for 5th with Columbus (Indians) in the IL Wild Card standings, 4.5 games back. They trail Pawtucket (54-45), Empire State (53-45), Norfolk (51-48), and Buffalo (50-48).
ALMOST THERE: With 46 games remaining, the Red Wings are already just 4 wins shy of matching last year's win total of 53 and 5 short of eclipsing it. The Red Wings are off to their best 98-game start since the 2007 club went 51-47. In fact, Rochester hasn't had a .500 record this late in the season since 2007.
a Rochester was 24 games below .500 at 37-61 at this point last year and 28 games below at 35-63 at this juncture in 2010.
A BRIEF RECAP: The Red Wings last night played a 15-inning game for their longest game by innings this year. It was their longest since an 18-inning affair vs. Louisville (Reds) May 9, 2011, when the Wings won 7-6 in walk-off fashion courtesy of Ray Chang's RBI single off Daniel Herrera.
a Yesterday's 15-inning contest took 3 hours, 51 minutes to play. By comparison, Rochester's 8-7 walk-off win in 9 innings vs. Toledo (Tigers) on Sunday took 3 hours, 48 minutes.
a Dan Sattler yesterday became the 9th different Red Wings' pitcher to record a save. It was his first at the Triple-A level. Rochester last year had 8 different hurlers notch at least one save. The 9 pitchers with one save are the club's most since 2009, when 11 different pitchers recorded a save.
HELLO, MY NAME IS...: Once they appear in a game, catcher Danny Lehmann and righthander Shairon Martis (today's scheduled starter) will become the 49th and 50th players used by the Red Wings. That total includes 24 position players and 26 pitchers. With Lehmann and Martis, 15 players have been promoted from Double-A New Britain this season. The total includes 10 pitchers.
a Martis is the 15th different starting pitcher used by the Red Wings.
PITCHING IN: The Red Wings lead the IL with a 2.98 ERA (48 ER/145.0 IP) in 16 games in July, ahead of Buffalo's 3.44 ERA (55 ER/144.0 IP) in 15 contests. Rochester ranks 7th in the IL with a 3.86 ERA overall.
a Since giving up 11 runs in 8.0 innings Monday at Norfolk, the Red Wings have allowed just 3 runs in 24.0 innings in the last 2 games.
a The Red Wings bullpen has tossed 13.0 consecutive scoreless innings in the last 2-plus games.
FOUR!!: The Red Wings have scored 4 or more runs in a season-high 7 straight games, accomplishing the feat for the first time since a 7-game streak July 8-17, 2010. The streak was extended last night thanks to Chris Parmelee's game-winning 3-run double in the 15th inning.
a The Red Wings last went at least 8 consecutive games with 4 or more runs scored August 9-16, 2008, when they had an 8-game streak.
a The Red Wings still rank last in the IL with 350 runs scored, 38 behind the next closest team Lehigh Valley, which has 388.
HOMERS ON THE ROAD: The Red Wings have homered in a season-high 4 straight road games (5 total) for the 2nd time, matching their effort from a 4-game series at Louisville June 14-17. The Red Wings last homered in at least 5 consecutive road games August 7-17, 2011, when they went 7 straight road contests with at least one long ball (9 total).
THIS DATE IN TWINS' HISTORY: Tom Brunansky hits an inside-the-park grand slam home run off Milwaukee's Jerry Augustine at the Metrodome.
