Tide Falls 1-0

Norfolk Tides News Release

June 1, 2007 - Tides' starter Rob Bell tossed nine shutout innings, but Pawtucket plated the only run of the contest in the top of the 12th inning as Norfolk fell 1-0 in front of 8,228 fans at Harbor Park Friday night.

Pawtucket's Jacoby Ellsbury led off the 12th frame with a single off of Tides' reliever Steve Green (1-2), and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joe McEwing. David Murphy followed by lining a triple into the right-center field gap, plating the only run of the contest.

The Red Sox' victory spoiled the outing of Bell, who allowed just three singles without walking a batter. Bell struck out eight on the evening, becoming the first Tides' pitcher to throw nine innings this season.

Bell gave way to relievers Jim Hoey and Cory Doyne, who both struck out two batters in a scoreless inning of relief. Hoey was making his Triple-A debut after being promoted from Bowie earlier in the day.

Pawsox starter Devern Hansack was also impressive, allowing three singles while walking one and striking out four in seven innings of work.

Terry Tiffee led the Tides' offense with two hits and a walk, as Norfolk dropped its 5th straight decision.

The Tides and Pawtucket continue their four-game set on Saturday night from Harbor Park, with fireworks scheduled for after the game. Left-hander Kurt Birkins (2-1, 2.25) takes the hill for Norfolk against Pawsox righty David Pauley (2-1, 3.10), with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m.
