Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Third baseman Josh Fields roped two doubles, right fielder Craig Wilson smacked his first homer of the season and right-hander Lance Broadway scattered just five hits over six innings as Charlotte scored a 7-5 win over Indianapolis in front of 10,331 Friday night at Victory field.
The Knights improve to 23-31 on the season and 7-16 on the road, while the Indians fall to 31-22 overall and 15-12 at home. Saturday will be the Tribe's 47th consecutive day atop the International League's West Division.
Fields (2-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI) smashed his first two-bagger in the opening inning and then brought two runners plateward with his second double in the fifth. Wilson (1-for-5, 1 R, 2 RBI) smacked his first long ball of the year -- a two-run shot to center -- in the first.
Broadway (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO) improved to 3-1 in his sixth quality start (6+ IP; no more than 3 ER) of the campaign.
Tribe DH Brad Eldred (1-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI) crushed his third roundtripper of the season -- a solo shot to left -- in the third. C Einar Diaz (1-for-3, 2 R, 1 RBI) followed in the fourth with his second dinger of the year -- a solo shot to left -- to make it 3-2. Eldred and Diaz also homered on Thursday night against Buffalo.
Charlotte stormed back with three runs in the fifth when C Casey Rogowski (1-for-4, 1 R), 2B Jason Bourgeois (1-for-4, 2 R) and SS Tomas Perez (2-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI) each crossed the plate.
Indianapolis threatened to knot the contest in the seventh when Diaz, CF Rajai Davis (1-for-3, 1 R) and SS Brian Bixler (1-for-2, 1 R) loaded the bases with no outs. 1B Jose Hernandez (1-for-5, 2 RBI) followed with a two-run double to right-center as Diaz and Davis trotted home. Eldred then brought Bixler to the plate on a sacrifice fly to left.
The Knights added an insurance run in the eighth. RHP Ryan Bukvich (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO) worked the final frame for his ninth save of 2007.
Indianapolis LHP Shane Youman (6.0 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO) suffered the loss, falling to 1-5.
The two teams return to Victory Field on Saturday at 7 p.m., for game two of the four-game series. RHP John Wasdin is expected to take the hill in a Major League rehabilitation assignment for Indianapolis, while RHP Charlie Haeger is scheduled to start for Charlotte.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
