Windy City ThunderBolts News Release
Crestwood, IL - The Windy City ThunderBolts collected their second win in a row on Thursday night at Hawkinson Ford Field by defeating the Richmond Roosters, 3-2.
Clemente Bonilla, in his first start since June 10, picked up right where he left off and stung a single to center to lead off the bottom of the first. Shortstop Jose Gutierrez grounded out to short to advance Bonilla to second. A single by Justin Schuda plated Bonilla to give the ThunderBolts an early 1-0 advantage.
Windy City tacked on two more runs in the next inning. Third baseman Jason Crosland struck a single as the first batter. Designated hitter Nick Klusaw drilled a triple to the right field corner to drive in Crosland. Catcher Jason Alcott was hit by a Matt Schweitzer offering to put two on with one out in the second. A single by center fielder Jerome McCoy pushed Klusaw across the plate to put the home team up 3-0.
The Roosters came back for one run against ThunderBolts' starter Preston Simms in the top half of the fifth inning. Hector Urena crossed home plate on a single by Mike Bidwell to cut the Windy City lead to 3-1.
Richmond got to within a run in the top of the ninth. Kevin White creamed the first pitch of the inning over the fence in right field to bring the Roosters tally up to two. That was as close as they would get as Chris Hayes settled down to retire the side.
Simms earned the win in his first professional start. Simms went seven strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits. The win boosts Simms' record to 1-0. Hayes tossed two innings of relief, giving up just the homerun to White, to earn his first save of the season. Schweitzer picked up the loss for the Roosters to drop his record to 1-4. Schweitzer went six and two-third innings, scattering eleven hits and relinquishing three runs.
The ThunderBolts will go for the sweep on Friday night at 7:05pm. Ryan Dittfurth (RHP, 1-4, 4.59) will be opposed by All-Star Tony Casoli (RHP, 6-1, 2.73). Tickets are still available.
