Evansville Otters News Release

Cody Blackard pitched 6.1 innings of shutout baseball as the Evansville Otters won their second straight game 4-0.

The Otters scored three of their four runs on ground balls. The first two came on groundouts off the bats of Trask Munoz and Scott Ward. The third run came for Evansville in the seventh. With runners on first and second, Denver Stuckey grounded a ball to Greg Buscher who knocked it down. The throw to second was wide, however, allowing Brian McKenna to score making it 3-0 in favor of the Otters.

The night, however, belonged to the Evansville defense, specifically Stuckey and the Otters two alumni from Gibson Southern High School who held the Mavericks at bay on the mound.

Blackard allowed three hits over his 6.1 innings walking two and striking out four. Stone finished the game off with 2.2 innings allowing two hits picking up his second save.

The shutout may never have happened had it not bee for two excellent defensive plays by Stuckey. In the fifth he made a diving stop to rob Buscher of a hit. In the sixth with runners on first and second, Stuckey was playing in on the grass against Dusty Hillman who had bunted on the first pitch. Hillman swung away on the 0-1 pitch. Stuckey dove to his left to snare the ball and throw to second for an out.

Stuckey also had a nice game offensively, going 2-for-4. His second hit was his 217th of his Otters career moving him past O. J. Garza for second place all-time on the Otters career list. He now trails just David Robinson who had 229 hits in his Otters career from 1997-1999.

The Otters go for the sweep tomorrow sending Brian Kroll (2-3) to the mound against Nick Renault (4-1) for the Mavericks. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
