Windy City ThunderBolts News Release

Crestwood, IL - The Windy City ThunderBolts fell just short of victory in their ninth inning comeback against the Gateway Grizzlies on Wednesday afternoon, 5-3.

Gateway jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four and a half innings. Grizzlies starter Erik Dessau worked a fast few innings to kick off the game. He retired the first twelve ThunderBolt batters he faced. Designated hitter Justin Schuda took Dessau deep to lead off the fifth inning to break up the no-hit bid. The dinger was Schuda's fifth on the season.

Single runs were tacked on by the Grizzlies in the seventh and eighth innings. The runs would provide insurance in ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth, the ThunderBolts mounted a rally. Rightfielder Nick Johnson led off the inning with a single to left and was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Schuda. Schuda came around to score on a mishandled ball by the shortstop. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, left fielder Justin Niefer singled to drive home Ryan Andrews to make the score 5-3, which would eventually become final.

Mike Renery takes the loss for the ThunderBolts, dropping his record to 3-4 on the season. Renery threw six and two-third innings, relinquishing four runs on six hits. Renery K'ed four and walked four.

Dessau earns the win for the Grizzles in his first start of the season. Dessau tossed six and two-third innings, allowing four hits while striking out seven.

The ThunderBolts will begin a three game set with the Kalamazoo Kings on Thursday night at the Hawk. Game time is 7:05pm and tickets are still available.
