Rockford RiverHawks News Release
O'FALLON, Miss. - The RiverHawks survived a ninth-inning threat from River City and beat the Rascals, 7-4, to win the series.
With the bases loaded and one out in the ninth, Jason Glosser got the potential game-winning run, Mike Conner, to hit into a game-ending double play.
Glosser picked up his fourth save of the season and Rockford starter John Richards improved to 3-1 with the win. River City starter Brian Keating (0-3) took the loss, going five innings and allowing five runs, four earned.
The Hawks never trailed in the game after jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Gooby Gerlits and Mike Lynch hit back-to-back RBI singles and Doug Schutt hit a two-run double as the Hawks sent eight men to the plate in the frame.
Rockford took a 5-0 lead in the fourth when Gerlits hit his seventh home run of the year, a solo blast.
River City got on the board with a two-run homer by Mikela Olsen in the bottom of the fourth. Richards gave up his second home run of the night when Mike Conner took him deep in the sixth to make it 5-3. An RBI double in the seventh by Kirk McConnell brought the Rascals to within a run at 5-4, but that was as close as they would get.
Matt Sauls hit his professional home run in the eighth to give the RiverHawks a two-run cushion.
An RBI single in the ninth by Ryan Larson then made it 7-4. After Larson was erased on a double play, Aaron McEachran hit a double to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
The RiverHawks return home at 7:05 p.m. on Thirsty Thursday, when Miller Lite sponsors Dollar Beer Night.
The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
