Windy City ThunderBolts News Release
CRESTWOOD, IL - The ThunderBolts suffered a sweep at the hands of the Lake Erie Crushers, dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Ozinga Field Sunday afternoon. Lake Erie took the first game 8-3 before winning a 6-2 decision in game two.
The Crushers (15-14) led from the top of the first inning in the opener. Isaac Benard's solo homer gave them a 1-0 edge.
The ThunderBolts (10-18) responded with a run in the bottom of the second inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Jake Hirabayashi lined a single to left field. The tying run scored on the play but a strong throw from Steven Kraft cut down the leading run at the plate and ended the threat.
It was all Crushers after that as they scored single runs in the third and fourth before putting the game away with a five run sixth inning.
Taylor Sugg (2-1) picked up the victory with 2.1 innings of relief and Kenny Mathews (1-4) went 5.2 innings, allowing eight runs (three earned) to take the loss.
Lake Erie never trailed game two. They put two runs on the board in the second, third and fourth innings, building a 6-0 lead. Zack Gray's two-run fourth-inning home run was the offensive highlight for the Crushers.
The Bolts put some pressure on them with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Brynn Martinez tripled and Hirabayashi singled him home. They proceeded to load the bases but Ryan Feierabend was able to pitch out of trouble, allowing just one more run on a Zach Racusin groundout.
Feierabend (2-2) lasted five innings for the win and Layne Schnitz-Paxton (0-2) allowed six runs in three innings for the loss.
The ThunderBolts' six-game home stand continues on Tuesday as the Schaumburg Boomers come to town. Jake Fisher (1-2, 8.13) gets the game one start for Windy City against Schaumburg's Bryan Ketchie (0-0, 10.80). All tickets are just two dollars at Ozinga Field for Value Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and fans not in attendance can find audio and video broadcasts through wcthunderbolts.com.
