New Mexico Thunderbirds News Release

Rio Rancho, NM - The New Mexico Thunderbirds announced today they have acquired forward Walter Sharpe (6-9, 250, Alabama Birmingham) from the Dakota Wizards in exchange for a third round pick in 2011.

Sharpe began the year with the Idaho Stampede, who selected him with the first pick in the second round of the 2010 NBA Development League Draft. He played in three games with the Stampede and averaged 19.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Sharpe was then traded to the Dakota Wizards on Nov. 29. With Dakota, Sharpe played in 18 games (nine starts) and averaged 8.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Sharpe was originally a second round pick by the Seattle Supersonics in 2008 out of the University of Alabama-Birmingham. The Sonics immediately traded Sharpe to the Detroit Pistons, where he played in eight games during the 2008-09 season.

The Thunderbirds will be visiting the Sioux Falls SkyForce this weekend on Friday and Saturday, but Sharpe will not be active for either game. His first game with the Thunderbirds is expected to be on Thursday Jan. 27 against the Austin Toros.

Thunderbirds' season tickets are currently on sale, with full and partial season packages available. Single game tickets are also now available online at www.nmtbirds.com or by calling 505-265-3865. The Thunderbirds also offer family four packs: 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 nachos, and 4 drinks for $44.
