
Thunderbirds Rally in Fourth, But Fall to Toros

Cedar Park, TX - After trailing by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter, the New Mexico Thunderbirds (14-22) cut the Austin Toros (15-20) lead to just three points, but ended up dropping their seventh straight game, 105-97.
In the first quarter, with the Thunderbirds up 10-9, the Toros went on an 11-2 run to take a 20-12 lead. Jamine Peterson hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left in the first quarter to cut the Toros lead down to five points and make the score 26-21.
The Thunderbirds opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run, capped by a Dar Tucker layup to take the lead back, 29-28. Shane Edwards had nine points in the first half and the T-Birds led 51-50 at the break.
In the third quarter, after the Thunderbirds scored the first bucket of the second half, but the Toros then went on a 10-0 run to take 60-53 lead. After the T-Birds cut the lead back down to two points, the Toros closed the quarter on a 14-4 run and led by 12 points heading into the fourth.
With 6:37 remaining in the fourth quarter, Leo Lyons hit a jumper to give the Toros their largest lead of the game, 89-75. The T-Birds answered with a 14-3 run over the next three and a half minutes to cut the lead down to three points. That would be as close as they would get, Cousin hit four straight free throws for the Toros to give the a seven point lead and control of the game for good.
Cousin finished with a double-double for the Toros, scoring 22 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Cardell Johnson shot just 1-for-7 from the floor, but dished out 15 assists for Austin.
The Thunderbirds will be off until Feb. 24 when they visit the Austin Toros at 6:30 p.m. The T-Birds will return home for March Giveaway Madness beginning on March 2 for Defined Fitness Night with a J.R. Giddens basketball card and T-Bird's Magnet giveaway.
