Austin Spurs News Release
Austin, TX Feb. 24, 2011 - The Toros defeated the Thunderbirds 105-97 Thursday night at Cedar Park Center. The Toros scoring tandem of Marcus Cousin and Lance Thomas combined for 45 points to lead the Toros in scoring. Carldell "Squeaky" Johnson, who is currently ranked eighth overall in the D-League in assists, contributed 15 assists to the Toros win.
The Toros started off strong by taking an eight-point lead early in the first quarter. The Toros maintained their lead ending the first quarter ahead of the Thunderbirds 26-21. The Thunderbirds closed the gap in the second quarter and managed to take a one-point lead going into halftime. Lance Thomas and Marcus Cousin combined to score 24 of the Toros total 42 first half points.
The Toros swiftly reclaimed the lead in the third by shooting 42 percent from beyond the arc as the Thunderbirds struggled to find their shooting rhythm. Key field goals from Cousin and Thomas allowed the Toros to take the biggest lead of the game with 13 points. The Toros led the Thunderbirds 78-66 at the end of the third quarter.
The Thunderbirds fought back in the fourth and cut down the Toros lead to three points with just three minutes left to play. However, the Toros proved to be too much down the stretch and a Cousin dunk, with less then 30 seconds to play sealed the victory for the Toros.
Toros' Lance Thomas and Thunderbirds Shane Edwards led all scorers with 23 points. Thomas was followed by Cousin (22) and Leo Lyons (16) to round out the Toros leader board. Dar Tucker (16) and Josh Bostic (13) followed Edwards in scoring for the Thunderbirds.
The Austin Toros (15-20) and the New Mexico Thunderbirds (14-22) will face off again for the second game of a weekend series at Cedar Park Center Saturday, February 26 at 7:30 p.m. All youth who wear their team t-shirt or jersey will receive free admission to the game.
