Stockton Thunder News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, proud ECHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League, and head coach Matt Thomas announced the team has signed rookie defenseman Matthew Clune (CLOON) to an amateur tryout agreement (ATO).

Clune, 22, is expected to suit up with the Thunder beginning tonight (1280 KWSX/StocktonThunder.com) in a 7:00 p.m. game at Citizens Business Bank Arena against the Ontario Reign.

"Matt comes from a great program at Holy Cross that has grown a recent reputation of producing good talent," said Thunder head coach Matt Thomas. "When speaking with coaches from that area you learn about the positive things they have to say about him and his game. Many of us recall his brother during his time in minors. They're kids that play the game with a hard-nosed approach."

The 6-foot-1 and 185 pound blueliner wrapped up a four year career with Holy Cross College (NCAA), racking up 53 points (14g-39a) and 186 penalty minutes from the blueline in 140 career games.

Clune recorded a career high 20 points (4g-16a) in 38 games as a 2011-12 senior and ranked second in the program for scoring among defensemen. He helped guide the Crusaders to a 19 win season, the most since 2006.

His brother, Richard, skated in 14 games as a forward in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings in 2009-10 and is currently playing in the American Hockey League with the Manchester Monarchs.
