PORTLAND, ME - Trailing 6-0 after two innings, the Thunder earned a series victory over the Portland Sea Dogs with a 9-8 win on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field.
Dillon Tate struggled early in his outing, surrendering six runs on six hits and two walks in 1.1 innings pitched. Tate's outing was the second-shortest of his professional career.
Trailing 6-0, the Thunder offense worked back-to-back walks to begin the third inning against Kevin McAvoy. Abiatal Avelino then hit an opposite field three-run home run to cut the deficit in half.
The teams traded runs in the fourth and the Sea Dogs held a 8-4 lead after four innings as the Thunder bullpen worked deep into the night. Jose Mesa Jr., Kaleb Ort, James Reeves and Jordan Foley allowed just one earned run over 7.2 innings of relief to give the team a chance to rally back.
In the seventh, Mandy Alvarez reached on an infield single and Ben Ruta worked a walk to put two on with one out. After a fly out by Chace Numata, Cesar Diaz hit a three-run homer over the Maine Monster to bring the Thunder within a run.
Working against Trey Ball in the eighth inning, the Thunder had two baserunners on by way of a walk when Alvarez came back to the plate. Alvarez lifted an 0-1 pitch into shallow right that hit off the glove of Portland's second baseman in fair play to let Chris Gittens and Jhalan Jackson score and take a 9-8 lead.
Jordan Foley worked a four-out save to finish off the series victory for the Thunder.
Chris Gittens set a career-high with four walks in the victory. Cesar Diaz hit his first home run since June 25, 2016 when he played for the Charleston River Dogs in the win.
Your Thunder return to ARM & HAMMER Park on Thursday night at 7:00pm against the Harrisburg Senators. Trenton's starter is to be announced, RHP Brady Dragmire (2-0, 2.67) will go for Harrisburg. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45pm on 920 AM The Jersey and online www.TrentonThunder.com/Broadcast.
