Trenton Thunder News Release
Akron, OH - A ground ball hit by Carlos Rivero with the bases loaded scored Lonnie Chisenhall in the bottom of the tenth inning, and the Aeros came away with a 4-3 victory over the Thunder on Thursday at Canal Park. With the loss, Trenton falls to 52-34 on the season.
For the first time this year, the Thunder led off the game with a home run, as Luis Nunez hit a solo shot off LHP Kelvin De La Cruz to begin play. The Aeros struck back in the third inning with three runs off RHP DJ Mitchell. Beau Mills led off the frame with a single and Carlos Rivero walked. Both runners came around to score to put Akron in front 2-1. Tim Fedroff, who drove in a run with a single to right field, scored on an RBI double by Jordan Henry, and Akron led 3-1 after two innings.
A solo home run to right field in the third inning by Marcos Vechionacci cut Akron's lead to 3-2. The Thunder would tie the game at three in the top of the seventh inning, as Luis Nunez led off the frame with a triple. With two outs and Brandon Laird at the plate, Connor Graham threw a wild pitch and Nunez came home to score the tying run. Trenton had a chance to take the lead in the top of the eighth inning with a runner at third base and two outs, but Jack Rye grounded out to end the threat.
RHP Zach Putnam (4-1) shut down the Thunder in order in the ninth and tenth innings, striking out five of the six batters he faced. With one out in the bottom of the tenth inning, Kevin Whelan (1-2) walked Lonnie Chisenhall and Matt McBride consecutively. A single by Beau Mills loaded the bases for Carlos Rivero, who hit a ground ball to second base, and Chisenhall beat the throw home to score the winning run.
Trenton starts their final series before the All-Star break at Bowie on Friday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Hector Noesi takes the ball for the Thunder, and Bowie will start RHP Chorye Spoone. Catch all the action on 107.7 FM The Bronc, or online at trentonthunder.com.
