Chesapeake Baysox News Release
ERIE, Pa. -- The Bowie Baysox were swept by the Erie SeaWolves in four games, sealed with a 9-1 defeat Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park. For the third consecutive game, the SeaWolves put Bowie away with an early seven-run inning that the Orioles prospects could not overcome.
Baysox starting pitcher Steve Johnson lasted just 2.2 innings before being pulled from the mound, on the hook for seven runs off 10 hits. Johnson is on a personal three-game losing streak, and has not won since June 12, at Harrisburg.
The teams were scoreless for two and a half innings before the dam burst on Johnson in the bottom of the third inning. Erie shortstop Cale Iorg led off with a double to left-center and was pushed to third by Andy Dirks, who singled to center and then stole second base. First baseman Rawley Bishop plated Iorg with a single to right field that advanced Dirks to third. Designated hitter Michael Bertram joined the hit parade with a single to center field that sent Dirks across the plate and Bishop to second base with a 2-0 'Wolves lead.
Erie third baseman Audy Ciriaco loaded the bases with a single to center, and Deik Scram cleared them with a double to left field that plated Bishop, Bertram and Ciriaco. Johnson finally recorded a pair of outs as Andy Bouchie and Justin Henry lined out to right field and shortstop, respectively. Second baseman Alden Carrithers kept the big inning going with a single to center that scored Scram from second before Iorg recorded his second hit of the inning with an infield single that put runners on first and second.
Johnson left the mound after Iorg's single and lefty Chad Thall took over with the score 6-0. The fact that he did not give up a home run for the second game in a row was likely little consolation for the slumping Baltimore native, who gave up 10 long balls in June. Johnson's final run was recorded when Thall gave up a single to Dirks that plated Carrithers, and when the dust settled, the SeaWolves held a 7-0 lead.
Erie pushed that lead to 8-0 when Ciriaco hit a one-out home run to center field off Thall.
The Baysox bats were silent most of the night, as Bowie racked up just six hits. Left fielder Caleb Joseph finally broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh inning, smashing a one-out home run to left field on the first pitch he saw from Erie reliever Jay Voss. Joseph is experiencing a power surge in July, with home runs in three of his last four games after entering the month with six homers on the year.
Erie restored their eight-run lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Iorg hit a triple to right field off former Orioles reliever Jim Hoey, and scored on a sacrifice fly by outfielder Kody Kaiser that made the score 9-1.
Bowie shortstop Greg Miclat got aboard in the eighth inning with an infield single and Joseph and catcher Steve Lerud drew back-to-back walks in the ninth, but the Baysox never really threatened the Erie lead, and the SeaWolves went on to complete the sweep.
The loss drops Bowie to 45-42 as they head into a challenging four-game set against the Eastern Division-leading Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. The Baysox remain in second place in the Western Division, 8.5 games behind the Altoona Curve, but are now just a game and a half ahead of third place Akron.
The Trenton series begins at 7:05 p.m. Friday, with Bowie's Largest Pillow Fight; fans are encouraged to bring a pillow to the game and participate in a pillow fight in the outfield after the game. The weekend's games feature fireworks and a comedy and magic show for kids by The Great Zucchini on Saturday, July 10, and Superhero Night on Sunday, July 11, with kids' favorite superheroes in costume for a meet-and-greet and autographs.
