Mississippi RiverKings News Release

Alex Goupil and Mike Batovanja each had a goal and an assist to lead the Wichita Thunder over the Mississippi RiverKings tonight 4-2 at the Kansas Coliseum.

The Thunder (10-18-0) scored twice early in the game. Kris Wiebe's seventh goal of the season at 1:09 of the first period and Goupil's sixth at 3:07 gave the Thunder a 2-0 lead. Kyle Bruce scored his sixth goal of the year with 4:37 left in the first to make it 3-0.

But the RiverKings (18-12-1) came back in the second period. Peter Kennedy scored his first of the year at 1:27 to get the RiverKings on the board, and Steve Makway scored on the power play for his fifth goal of the season at 13:48 to make it a 3-2.

However, Sebastien Laplante stood tall in the Thunder net and kept the RiverKings from tying the game in the third period. Batovanja scored into an empty net for his second of the season with 35 seconds remaining.

Sebastien Centomo made 36 saves for the RiverKings, who finish their six-game road trip 0-6. Laplante made 42 saves for the Thunder.

In off-ice news, the RiverKings have acquired 27-year-old rookie center Jason Weitzel from the Oklahoma CIty Blazers for future considerations. In 19 games this season for the Blazers, Weitzel has three goals and 10 assists with 18 penalty minutes. He also played briefly with Fuessen in the German Oberliga. In four games there earlier this year, the 5-10, 182-pound Weitzel had one goal and four assists.

The RiverKings come home for the first of two against the Youngstown SteelHounds on Friday. The game begins at 7:05 p.m. and the pre-game show begins at 6:55 p.m. on Sports 56 WHBQ.
