Mudbugs Tie Team Record Home Win Streak

January 8, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs tied a franchise record with their 15th consecutive home win on Tuesday night, beating the Youngstown SteelHounds 5-2. The victory is also Bossier-Shreveport's 11th in a row overall, moving them three points ahead of the 'Hounds for the top spot in the Northeast Division.

In their final game before a seven-game road trip, the Mudbugs got two powerplay goals and an assist from Chris Brassard, a goal and an assist from both Kevin Cooper and Brett Smith and 33 saves from Ken Carroll in his eighth consecutive win in goal.

The first period started with the Mudbugs carrying the play and scoring on their first man-advantage. Brassard's wrist shot from the left circle found the top corner past Roberts at 6:25 to put the 'Bugs on top. Youngstown turned the tables though with a powerplay goal of their own just a few minutes later. Carroll made the save on Jeff Alcombrack's point shot, only to have Kirill Starkov put in the rebound to tie the game. Carroll turned the tables later in the period though, with a highlight-reel glove save on a Youngstown rebound chance. The game stayed 1-1 after the first 20 minutes.

Bossier-Shreveport retook the lead just 17 seconds into the second period. Chris Brassard chipped the puck off the glass out of the defensive zone to Brett Smith, who was joined by new Mudbug Mike Falk on a 2-on-1. Brad Roberts made the save on Smith, but the puck deflected off the skate of the defenseman Nathan Schwartzbauer and into the net to give the Mudbugs the lead. The 'Bugs looked strong for most of the middle period and had a few great scoring chances that were thwarted by Roberts.

Bossier-Shreveport carried that one-goal lead into the third period, adding to it about seven minutes in. On a rush up the ice, Joe Ori hit Daniel Pegoraro, who gave it to Tyrel Lucas, then back to Pegoraro driving wide of the defenseman, then back to Lucas in slot, who buried his 12th of the year to make it a two-goal lead. Minutes later, Cooper was held up on a breakaway and given a penalty shot. The Mudbugs' leading scorer over the last ten games faked a forehand shot and then tucked a backhander through Roberts' five-hole to extend the lead. Youngstown didn't back off at that point, getting a powerplay goal from Jeff Alcombrack after a delay of game penalty against Bossier-Shreveport to make it 4-2. The icing on the cake for the Mudbugs was Chris Brassard finishing a nice play from Jake Ortmeyer with a backhand goal, his team-leading 13th of the year, on a late powerplay to make it 5-2.

Bossier-Shreveport finished 2 for 8 on the powerplay and has now scored five powerplay goals in their last two games. Youngstown finished 2 for 3 on the man-advantage, and the SteelHounds outshot the Mudbugs 35-34 in the game.

The Mudbugs now sport the second-longest overall win streak in franchise history at 11, behind only the 12 straight games won by the 1998-99 team. The 15 consecutive home wins ties the franchise mark set by the 2003-04 Mudbugs, but unfortunately, Bossier-Shreveport won't get a chance to break that record for quite some time. The Mudbugs will now embark on a season-high seven game road swing that will keep them away from CenturyTel Center until a January 26th meeting with the Laredo Bucks. First up on the extended road trip will be a Friday night meeting with Rio Grande Valley , followed by a Saturday night showdown in Laredo with the Bucks. Opening faceoff on Friday against the Killer Bees is set for 7:35 pm, with our radio pre-game coverage beginning at 7:15 on AM 1130 KWKH.
