Trenton Thunder News Release
Trenton, NJ- Two close calls at home plate forced two Thunder ejections and proved to be enough momentum for the Portland Sea Dogs, as they defeated Trenton 5-2 at Waterfront Park on Saturday night. With the loss, the Thunder fall to 9-7.
Trenton starting pitcher Ryan Pope ran into some trouble in the second inning once again after giving up a leadoff single to Lars Anderson and a questionable fair ball down the left field line from Ray Chang that was ruled a double. With runners at second and third, Portland leftfielder Chih-Hsien Chiang grounded out to second base, which was enough to score Anderson from third base and make it 1-0 Sea Dogs.
Pope fell into another jam in the sixth inning, and gave up three straight hits to lead off the inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Chiang again was able to bring in Lars Anderson from third base on a sacrifice fly to right field, and Portland went ahead 2-0. Pope would then walk Jason Place to load the bases once again, and Manager Tony Frankliln called on RHP Eric Wordekemper to get Trenton out of the jam. However, a wild pitch from Wordekemper brought in Chang, and Wordekemper would surrender a sacrifice fly from Ryan Kalish that would score Iglesias from third. After Iglesias was ruled safe on a close play at the plate, Franklin came out to argue, and was eventually ejected by umpire Jon Saphire. In total, the Sea Dogs would get three runs on three hits in the inning to go up 4-0.
The Thunder would get one back in the home half of the sixth when Jose Gil, who led off with a double, came around to score after a ball skipped off the glove of Portland shortstop Jose Iglesias and rolled into centerfield. However, the Sea Dogs answered right back next inning on a Nate Spears solo home run over the right field wall to give Portland a 5-1 lead.
Trenton scored once more in the ninth inning, but Jose Gil grounded out to end the ball game.
Pope (0-2) pitched 5.1 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked five.
Catcher Austin Romine was also ejected in the third inning after arguing a play at the plate in which he was called out.
The Thunder and Sea Dogs conclude their four game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM. LHP Jeremy Bleich will start for Trenton, and Portland goes with LHP Felix Doubront.
