Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - A Max St. Pierre three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning was the difference maker as the Erie SeaWolves topped the Altoona Curve, 4-3, at Blair County Ballpark on Saturday night. Dustin Molleken (0-2) suffers the loss while Jon Kibler (2-2) earns his second win of the season for Erie. Ryan Ketchner recorded his first save of the season for the SeaWolves.
With the Curve leading, 3-1, after six, Molleken was called out of the Curve bullpen to try and hold the lead and the win for starting pitcher Mike Crotta. After Molleken got Audy Ciriaco to ground into a fielder's choice to put one out on the scoreboard, he walked Michael Bertram to put two on ahead of the catcher St. Pierre. It was St. Pierre's third home run of the season.
Crotta pitched very well for the Curve, allowing just one run on three hits in six innings with six strikeouts. With the quality start, Crotta has lowered his season ERA to 1.78 through is first four starts.
Altoona initially trailed in the ballgame, 1-0, but Matt Hague went deep for the Curve in the fourth to tie the game at one. It was the second home run of the season for Hague, who also extended his consecutive games-on-base streak to 12 games with the homer.
In the fifth, Alex Presley and Jose de los Santos each singled and Gorkys Hernandez was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Jim Negrych. Negrych knew exactly what to do as he hit a single that scooted through the middle and into centerfield to drive in Presley and de los Santos to put Altoona up by two.
Presley finished the game 1-for-3 and extended his team-best hitting streak to 10 games while Negrych finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. The Buffalo, N.Y. native now has six RBI over his last two games.
Altoona (11-5) will try and bounce back on Sunday to earn a series split with Erie (6-10) when the two meet in the final game of the series at 2 p.m. RHP Jared Hughes (3-0, 1.72) is scheduled to start for Altoona while RHP L.J. Gagnier (1-0, 1.96) will toss for Erie.
