New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - New Britain returned to its early season form of first inning struggles as Harrisburg crossed the plate six times in the opening inning and went on to down the Rock Cats, 15-5 on Saturday night.
In a game full of sloppy play by both teams and a combined five errors, the Senators managed to rout the Rock Cats by pounding out 19 hits. Danny Espinosa led the way with a game-high four hits. Bradley Coon, Jhonatan Solano, and Michael Martinez each had three hits apiece.
The Senators battered Rock Cats starter Carlos Gutierrez around for eight runs on 10 hits - including seven in the first inning - through four innings. Gutierrez (0-1) struggled out of the gate, allowing a leadoff base hit to Coon. Espinosa followed with a double to left field that knocked in Coon for a 1-0 lead. Gutierrez issued a one out walk before serving up another RBI double to Leonard Davis. Chris Marrero added to the hit parade with a two-run single to center field for the 4-0 advantage. A fielding error by center fielder Joe Benson allowed Marrero to move to third. Adam Fox followed with a base hit to center to knock in Marrero. Coon came to the plate again with only out and knocked in another run on a groundout to short before Gutierrez stopped the bleeding on a fly out.
The Rock Cats got on the board in the second on an RBI double by Estarlin De Los Santos. Rene Tosoni added an RBI triple in the bottom of the third to cut the lead, 6-2.
Harrisburg went onto score four more runs - three earned - against reliever Joe Testa, who struck out four in two innings.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Rock Cats' bats woke up again to tack on three more runs, including a two-run single by Mark Dolenc that closed the gap, 11-5. That was as close as New Britain would get, though, as the Senators tacked on four more runs on the night highlighted by a two-run triple by Martinez in the eighth. All four runs were charged to Henry Arias, who allowed five hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Erik Arnesen limited the Rock Cats to two runs on six hits through four innings, but came away with the no-decision. Rafael Martin (1-0) picked up the win with 2 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.
