(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder (31-20) were unable to complete another dramatic come-from-behind win, losing 2-1 to the Altoona Curve (27-24) Tuesday night at Waterfront Park in game one of the three-game set. Cody Johnson doubled home Bradley Suttle in the bottom of the ninth to bring the winning run to the plate with no one out, but the Thunder could not bring Johnson home and fell by one run. Craig Heyer was the tough-luck loser for the Thunder, giving up just two runs in six innings. Despite the loss, the Thunder complete the month of May with a 21-8 record, just two wins shy of tying a franchise record.
The Thunder waited until the bottom of the ninth inning to strike against the Curve, the defending Eastern League champions. Trailing 2-0 entering the decisive frame, Cody Johnson and Bradley Suttle doubled to right field to cut the Curve lead in half at 2-1. That would be it for the Thunder though as Curve closer Noah Krol retired the next three hitters to pick-up the save and clinch it for Altoona 2-1.
The loss is just the second in 13 games for the Thunder, who will need back-to-back wins on Wednesday and Thursday to extend their series winning streak to ten.
It's an Educational Day on Wednesday at Waterfront Park as the Thunder will take on the Curve at 10:35 AM for the second game of a three-game series. The Thunder will give the pearl to LHP Manny Banuelos (2-0, 2.16). Altoona will counter with LHP Aaron Thompson (2-4, 4.89). Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 10:15 AM.
