Bowie, MD- The Thunder gave up the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Bowie plated four runs to go ahead and defeat Trenton 6-3 in the first game of their four game set on Friday night. With the loss, Trenton falls to 52-35 on the season.
Trenton struck first in the fourth inning off Bowie RHP Chorye Spoone, as Austin Romine and Brandon Laird each reached on base hits, and both were driven home on an RBI single by Marcos Vechionacci to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead. Bowie answered back with a run in the bottom of the fourth with Joe Mahoney tagging up on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Danny Figueroa.
The first baseman Mahoney, called up before the game from High-A Frederick, finished the night 3-for-3 with three runs scored. He also hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at two. However, Vechionacci came to bat in the top of the seventh and hit a solo home run the opposite way to left field, and Trenton went back on top by a score of 3-2 at the end of seven innings.
After Mike Gonzalez (1-0) sat down the Thunder in the top of the eighth inning, the BaySox rallied with four runs off Ryan Pope in the bottom frame, highlighted by a two-run double by Brandon Waring to give Bowie a 6-3 edge.
Pedro Beato came on for the ninth inning and allowed just one hit to record his eighth save of the year. In the loss for Trenton, Marcos Vechionacci finished the night going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a home run.
