Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Starting pitcher George Kontos went six solid innings to lead the Thunder past Harrisburg 6-4 on Tuesday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton has won five straight games, and reduced its magic number to clinch the Northern Division to 5, as Portland lost on Tuesday night to Altoona.
Trenton (78-50) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by Left fielder Colin Curtis off of Harrisburg reliever Zack Segovia (2-2). Segovia was in early because Harrisburg Starting pitcher Adrian Alaniz left the game due to injury in the bottom of the first. Trenton's lead increased to 2-0 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Catcher P.J. Pilittere. Harrisburg cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Shortstop Ian Desmond. But, the Thunder took a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning as Pilittere grounded into a doubleplay. The Thunder tacked on two runs in the seventh inning to make it 5-1. Second baseman Kevin Russo had an RBI single, and Center fielder Austin Jackson drove home a run with a ground out. The lead increased to 6-1 in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Designated hitter Edwar Gonzalez.
In the ninth inning, Harrisburg closed the gap with three runs. Catcher Javi Herrera and Designated hitter Garrett Guzman both scored on wild pitches by Thunder reliever Kevin Whelan. Second baseman Seth Bynum also had an RBI single as part of the three-run inning for Harrisburg. With the tying run at the plate, Whelan ended up striking out Left fielder Marvin Lowrance for the final out of game. Kontos (5-11) tossed six innings and only allowed three hits and one run. He struck out five and walked three. Segovia allowed seven hits and five runs in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss. Curtis had three hits, including his home run in the win. Jackson and Gonzalez also had two hits in the victory for Trenton.
Trenton and Harrisburg will play the middle game of the three-game series on Wednesday night from Waterfront Park. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. RHP Eric Hacker (6-3, 2.73) will start for Trenton against Harrisburg LHP Cory VanAllen (3-2, 4.99).
