Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- The Defenders dominated every faculty of the game on Tuesday night as Garrett Broshuis led Connecticut past the Aeros of Akron by a final of 8-0.
After a bizarre top half of the first, Garrett Broshuis danced his way out of trouble to segue to the home half. With two outs quickly recorded, Olmo Rosario delivered an infield single, Eliezer Alfonzo was struck by an 0-2 fastball and Adam Witter walked to load the bags. Simon Klink was next and the red-hot switch hitting first baseman smacked a two-run single to center and Carlos Sosa followed with a single of his own to bring in a man and make it 3-0 home team.
Dave Maroul started the second frame with a double down the line, Kyle Haines belted a single to put runners on the corners and Antoan Richardson got aboard on an error on the second baseman. The miscue allowed Maroul to score as Rosario reached on a fielder's choice and Alfonzo ripped a single to plate Haines. Finally, Witter blistered a double down the line to score the speedy Rosario and Connecticut held a 6-0 advantage.
After a silent third, the fourth brought more noise off the stick of Witter who smashed his second run-scoring double of the night as the lead ballooned to 7-0.
Rosario would add a solo home run to deep left center in the last of the sixth to give Connecticut an 8-0 lead they would not relinquish.
Garrett Broshuis' six scoreless innings where he allotted three hits and two walks while fanning seven proved to be enough for his 13th win of 2008. Adam Cowart, Nate Bump and Kelvin Pichardo chucked scoreless frames in relief as the Defenders cruised to a 8-0 win. On the other side of the ball, Kevin Dixon suffered his tenth loss as he gave up seven runs in four innings.
Wednesday night's contest against the Akron Aeros will begin at 6:35pm at Dodd Stadium. This is the final home stand for the Defenders in 2008 and tickets are still available throughout the six-game stint at www.ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
