New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Binghamton, NY- Eric Nielsen and J.P. Arencibia hit back-to-back, ninth inning sacrifice flies, and Orlando Roman dazzled with a season-high three innings of shutout baseball, but the Binghamton Mets edged the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 3-2, before a crowd of 4,234 on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium in the opening game of a three-game series.

Binghamton (68-62) broke up a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Caleb Stewart (2-for-4, 2B, RBI, R) drilled a run-scoring double into the left-centerfield gap, scoring Mike Carp (walk) all the way from first base for a 1-0 Mets' lead. That was the first hit off Brad Mills and ended the left-hander's stretch of 18 innings without allowing an earned run. One out later, Ambiroix Concepion (1-for-4, RBI) made it 2-0 with a run-scoring single that plated Stewart, doubling the amount of earned runs allowed by Mills in his four previous career Eastern League starts.

The Mets made it 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Luis Castillo (2-for-4, RBI), playing in the fourth game of a Major League rehabilitation assignment from the New York Mets, lined an RBI single to left that scored Jose Coronado (1-for-3, 2B, R), who had doubled.

That was enough for Jose Sanchez (13-6), who continued his mastery of the Fisher Cats by tossing eight shutout innings. Sanchez retired 18 consecutive batters between the second and eighth innings before David Smith (1-for-3) and Jacob Butler (1-for-3) hit back-to-back, one-out singles in the top of the eighth inning. Sanchez responded by inducing an inning-ending, double-play grounder from Ryan Patterson (0-for-3), preserving the 3-0 lead. In two starts against New Hampshire, the right-hander has scattered eight hits in 15 scoreless innings with 16 strikeouts.

New Hampshire (55-75) rallied against Tim Lavigne in the top of the ninth inning when Chris Gutierrez (0-for-2, BB, R) walked and Scott Campbell (1-for-3, R) reached on a catcher's interference. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, Nielsen (0-for-3, SF) and Arencibia (0-for-3, SF) hit consecutive sac flies, trimming the deficit to 3-2. Lavigne recovered to record his ninth save when Brian Dopirak (0-for-4) lined out to left.

Mills (2-2) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in five innings. The southpaw notched five strikeouts and walked two.

The Fisher Cats established a single-season franchise record for losses in a season by dropping to 55-75 on the season.

New Hampshire and Binghamton play the second game of their three-game series at NYSEG Stadium Wednesday night at 7:05pm when Fisher Cats' right-hander Brandon Magee (6-12, 4.97) takes on B-Mets' right-hander Dylan Owen (0-0, 0.00), who will make his Double-A debut. Radio coverage begins at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.

The Fisher Cats open their final three-game homestand of the season Tuesday night, August 26, against the Binghamton Mets at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
