
Thunder bats collect 21 hits in 15-2 win

(Portland, ME)- Trenton used an eight-run second inning off Portland starter Jose Vaquedano en route to a 15-2 win over the Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field on Monday night. The win brings the Thunder to within five game of Portland for 1st Place in the Northern Division.
Trenton (45-38) tied their franchise record with 21 hits, last accomplished on on April 22, 2001 against the New Haven Ravens. The Thunder had hits in only five of their nine times to the plate. They plated eight runs on eight hits in the 2nd Inning off Vaquedano. After singles by Vince Faison and Kevin Howard to start the inning, C Omir Santos picked up an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. 2B Gabe Lopez, 1B Eric Duncan and Howard added two-run hits later in the inning. Vaquedano (5-3) took the loss allowing eight runs in two innings.
Thunder starter Phil Hughes fell one out short of a win. He left after 4 2/3 innings due to a pitch count. Hughes did not allow a run on two hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. Reliever J.B. Cox (5-2) picked up the win with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief.
With an 8-0 lead, DH Randy Ruiz slugged a two-run homer in the 3rd Inning for a 10-0 lead. It was Ruiz's 11th homer of the season. RF Bronson Sardinha added a two-run homer, his 10th of the year, in the 6th Inning for a 12-0 lead. RBI singles by SS J.T. Stotts, Howard and Santos capped the night.
Howard had four hits and three RBI to lead the offense. Faison had three hits and three runs scored. Santos collected three hits and two RBI, while Sardinha had two hits and three RBI.
Trenton begins a three-game series with Harrisburg on Tuesday at 7:05 PM. Tyler Clippard (3-10, 4.69) starts for the Thunder against Harrisburg's Beltran Perez (5-2, 3.38).
