
Thunder clobbers Sea Dogs 15-2

Sea Dogs forced to used two position players to pitch The Trenton Thunder used an 8-run second inning, taking three of four from the Portland Sea Dogs, 15-2 the final on Monday night at Hadlock Field. Portland's lead is now five games over the Thunder for the top spot in the Northern Division. Monday night's game featured the fifth sellout of the season at 7,368.
Jose Vaquedano (5-3) suffered the loss for Portland, lasting only two innings, surrendering eight runs on eight hits, walking two and fanning two. Portland's starters finished the four-game series with an ERA of 11.78, allowing 25 runs (24 earned) in 18.1 IP.
Brent Cox (5-2) retired all seven batters faced to earn his fifth win of the season. Trenton starter Phillip Hughes worked four and 2/3 innings, allowing just two hits (back-to-back singles to Zach Borowiak and Dustin Kelly), two walks and fanned nine.
Chad Spann knocked in both runs for the Sea Dogs with a two-run double in the ninth inning off Gerado Cassadiego.
Randy Beam worked two innings, allowing two runs on two hits and his second home run of the series to Randy Ruiz. Frank Brooks, who started game two of the series, surrendered three runs (two earned) in two innings pitched. Edgar Martinez worked a perfect seventh with two strikeouts and infielders David Bacani and Dustin Kelly worked the final two innings.
Kelly made his first professional appearance on the mound, allowing two hits but no runs. Bacani yielded two runs and three hits, walking one during a one-inning stint.
Kevin Howard led Trenton's 21-hit attack, going 4-for-5 with 3 RBI. Ruiz had two hits, including his 5th home run of the season against Portland. The Thunder set a franchise record for the most hits in a single-game and averaged 11 runs per game during the four-game set. Eric Duncan, Vince Faison and Omir Santos each had three hits. Gabe Lopez and Bronson Sardinha had two hits with J.T Stotts going 1-for-4 with an RBI single. Brett Gardner was the only starter for Trenton without a hit.
Notes...Trenton has won the season series from the Sea Dogs after taking nine of the first 13 with three meetings left...Portland has lost two straight series at Hadlock Field...The final seven days of the first half for the Sea Dogs features nine game, including two doubleheaders at Connecticut and New Hampshire.
