AA Winnipeg Goldeyes

Thrilling Comeback Falls One Run Short

July 17, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

As the Winnipeg Goldeyes have the experienced the last two nights, playing from behind is an awfully tough way to win baseball games.

After falling behind 2-0 to the in the top of the first inning Friday night, the Goldeyes trailed the rest of the night and lost 9-8 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats before 5,571 fans at Shaw Park.

The Goldeyes fall to 22-30 with the loss and remain eight games back of the Kansas City T-Bones in the American Association wild card race.

Following the early deficit, the Goldeyes scored a run in the bottom of the first when Casey Haerther singled home Adam Heisler, who led off with a double.

Gary tallied two more runs off Goldeyes start Coby Cowgill in the top of the second, but Winnipeg responded again in the bottom of the third with a Luis Alen lead off home run.

The Goldeyes cut the RailCats' lead to just a run in the bottom of the fifth, as Chris Robinson led off the inning with a walk, went to second on a Heisler bunt, went to third on an Alen fly out to right field and scored on a Grider single.

However, the RailCats tallied three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-3 lead.

Haerther singled in Grider in the bottom of the eighth, but RailCats added two runs in the ninth off Goldeyes closer Jailen Peguero that proved to be critical to preventing a Goldeyes comeback.

Winnipeg rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a Nic Jackson two-run home run, an RBI fielder's choice from Grider and RBI ground out from Haerther. The comeback fell a run short, though, as Mazzola struck out with Grider - the potential tying run - on second base.

Heisler, Grider and Haerther paced the Goldeyes with three hits each, while Haerther had three RBI and Mazzola drove in a pair of runs.

Cowgill suffered the loss after giving up six runs - three earned - 5 2/3 innings of work. Gary starter Charle Rosario won his ninth game of the season.

The final game of the series and the eight-game homestand goes Saturday night at Shaw Park. Goldeyes ace Nick Hernandez (5-2, 1.89) will get the start for the Goldeyes, as Winnipeg tries to split its second four-game series of the homestand. Gary will counter with Rene Solis (1-5, 3.70). Game time is 6:00 p.m.

Tickets for all Goldeyes home games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
