RailCats Break out of Lumber Slumber in 14-7 Win

Winnipeg, MB, CA July 16, 2015- What a difference a day makes. One night after struggling at the plate the Gary South Shore RailCats broke out of month long slumber with the lumber to beat Winnipeg 14-7 Thursday night at Shaw Park in Winnipeg.

The RailCats never trailed and set season highs in both runs scored and hits in a game. Every player in the batting order recorded at least two hits and the RailCats dialed up the clubs first deep ball since June 19th (19 games) in the win. JD Pulfer led off the game with double in a game, where he would fall just a triple shy of the cycle. Jaime Del Valle brought him in with a one out single up the middle off of Goldeyes starter Kyle Anderson to make it 1-0 in the first inning.

The Cats would add three more in the second with Roger Bernal getting aboard with a double and with one out Ryan Brockett drawing a walk. Pulfer then took Anderson deep with his first homerun of the year and the teams fifth to make it 4-0. The South Shore then added four more in the top of the third highlighted by second day RailCat, Jose Sermo, who drove in two an RBI double.

While the offense was in fine form the RailCats also saw the return of Travis McGee to the starting rotation for the first time since early June. McGee tossed 3.2 innings charge with three runs but only one was earned as the defense let him down. McGee threw only 58 pitches on his return off the inactive list. Rookie, Dan Ludwig picked up his first win as a professional working in 2.1 IP scattering five hits and allowing hit first earned run of the season. Ludwig got in a bases loaded jam with one out in the fifth but was able to get a 1-2-2-3 double play ball to escape anymore damage.

In the fifth with the RailCats up 8-3 the Cats got another RBI from Del Valle and then in the sixth sent nine men to the plate for the second time in the game with Sermo and Brockett knocking in a run a piece to make it 13-3. After the Goldeyes picked up a two out RBI single from Chris Robinson in the home half of the sixth the RailCats got one more in the eighth from Sermo with an RBI single.

Drew Martinez went 5 for 6, his best game of the season and became the sixth RailCat to have five hits in a game and the four runs scored by JD Pulfer, also tied the mark with 11 other Cats. Del Valle drove in three going 4 for 6. Sermo, who was signed this week by the RailCats, added four RBI in the win with a pair of doubles. Brockett saw his average climb to .308 with his three hit night and Roger Bernal scored three runs in a 2 for 5 effort.

Anderson (1-4) was charged with the loss giving up eight earned runs be he was not the only victim of the South Side sticks. Mark Pope gave up four earned in one inning with the bullpen total of six allowed on the night.

The RailCats will try make to two in a row, Friday night in game two of the series at 7:05pm. The American Association pitcher of the week, Charle Rosario (8-3, 3.45) will take his turn for the RailCats, while the "Fish" will send out RHP Coby Cowgill (2-2, 4.82).
