Clearwater Threshers News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - Yacksel Rios held the Yankees in check through five innings on Friday night, but the Threshers offense could not solve lefty Chaz Hebert in a 1-0 loss at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Hebert (4-4) went the distance for Tampa (27-28), scattering five hits and a walk. It was just the fourth complete game shutout thrown in the FSL this season.
Rios (1-2) kept the Yankees off balance through his five frames in the start for Clearwater, permitting only a run on two hits and a walk. The 21-year old matched a season-high with five innings in his fourth start of the season.
The lone run came in the third. Michael O'Neill dropped a blooper down the right field line and hustled into second for a double, and would later steal third base with one out. Derek Toadvine walked to set up runners at the corners.
Abiatal Avelino chopped a grounder to short, which Angelo Mora fielded and tossed to Emmanuel Marrero to get the force on Toadvine. The relay back to first was a split-second late as Avelino raced down the line to beat it, allowing O'Neill to score with the game's first and only run.
Harold Guerrero tossed two scoreless frames out of the Threshers bullpen, and Miguel Nunez followed suit by hurling a perfect eighth inning.
Clearwater (27-28) outhit the Yankees 5-4, but all five of the Threshers hits came with two outs.
Dylan Cozens collected two of the five hits, going 2-for-4 with a single and a double, while Mitch Walding notched two singles.
The Threshers will try to salvage the series finale on Saturday as Victor Arano (0-6) toes the rubber against the Yankees Jonathan Holder (3-2). First pitch is set for 6 p.m., and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network beginning at 5:45 p.m.
