Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA - Chaz Hebert pitched the best game of his professional career. The southpaw threw his first career complete game shutout as the Tampa Yankees (28-27) defeated the Clearwater Threshers (27-28), 1-0, on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The lone run of the game scored in the bottom of the third. Michael O'Neill began the frame by blooping a double down the right field line. One out later, with Derek Toadvine at the plate, O'Neill swiped third. Toadvine walked, bringing up Abiatal Avelino. A two-hopper to shortstop looked to be a double-play ball. After Toadvine was retired at second, Avelino beat out the throw to first, allowing O'Neill to score.
Hebert (4-4) had all the run support he needed. The 22-year-old from Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, completed nine scoreless frames, scattering five hits, a walk and one hit-batter while tallying four strikeouts. Hebert needed only 97 pitches (73 strikes) for the complete game win.
Yacksel Rios (1-2) took the loss for Clearwater. The right-hander allowed a run on two hits in five innings of work, walking one batter and hitting another while striking out three.
O'Neill (2-for-3, R, SB) collected half of Tampa's four total hits. Avelino (0-for-4) picked up his fifth RBI of the season for the Yankees.
The T-Yanks will go for the sweep in the series finale on Saturday. RHP Jonathan Holder (3-2, 2.38 ERA) will get the start for Tampa. RHP Victor Arano (0-6, 6.46 ERA) is scheduled to go for Clearwater.
