Three Sockers named to All-Star Game
February 4, 2004 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
San Diego Sockers News Release
(SAN DIEGO, Calif.) - Sean Bowers, Victor Nogueira and Paul Wright will play for the USA at the 2004 All-Star Game, to be played on Sunday, February 29, at the Family Arena in St. Charles, MO, home of the St. Louis Steamers. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:05 Central Time.
"I think it's a tremendous honor that three of our players have been named to the 2004 All-Star team," said Sockers Head Coach Brian Quinn. "Sean, Victor and Paul are very worthy selections and are a reflection of the high-caliber players coaches want and expect."
Because of the three-division alignment of this year's league, the team format is a little different than past years. The game will feature the MISL USA team, comprised of U.S. citizens, versus the MISL International team, made up of foreign citizens.
Victor Nogueira, who is fourth in the League in goals against average (4.50), third in minutes played (1, 254) and second in saves (263), will be playing in his eleventh All-Star game. The ageless veteran has claimed 13 Goalkeeper of the Year Awards, nine in the last 11 years.
Joining Nogueira on defense is the League's leader in blocks, Sean Bowers. With 63 for the season, Bowers is making his fourth All-Star appearance.
"I think it is a great honor to be selected for the team," said Bowers. "I do think that it's more of a reflection of how good the team is, rather than on my individual success."
Rounding out the Sockers' representation is Paul Wright, who leads the Sockers with 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists). Wright has been playing professional indoor since 1988 and this is his fifth All-Star appearance.
"Frankly, I'm shocked that I was selected to the team. It was definitely something I wasn't expecting," said Wright. Players were selected by a league-wide voting campaign and for the first time, fans can get in on the action. Beginning on Friday, February 6, fans will be able to visit the MISL's official website, www.misl.net, and choose the 2004 All-Star starting lineups. Online voting will end at 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, February 22.
The starting lineups will be introduced the following Thursday at the MISL All-Star Welcome Reception, to be held at the Ameristar Casino in St. Charles. All-Star Coaches will be announced next Monday, February 9.
The 2004 MISL All-Star Weekend will encompass three days of festivities designed to celebrate the past, present, and future of indoor soccer. Included in the celebration will be the Spalding All-Star Youth Skills Competition, the MISL All-Star Skills Challenge, the famous MISL Autograph Alley, and the Commissioner's Celebration of Excellence. The All-Star Weekend will culminate on Sunday, February 29, with the League's showcase event, the 2004 All-Star Game, followed by a Legends Game featuring a galaxy of former indoor greats in an MISL Legends versus St. Louis Steamers Legends format.
