
Steamers Butcher picked for MISL All-Star Game

(St. Louis, Feb. 4, 2004) -- St. Louis Steamers forward Steve Butcher is one of 16 players selected to represent the MISL USA team in the 2004 MISL All-Star Game, to be played Sunday, Feb. 29 at the St. Charles Family Arena. Butcher, 25, leads the Steamers this season in goals (19) and points (31). This is the first MISL All-Star selection for Butcher, a native of North Tonawanda, N.Y.
The All-Star Game, Feb. 29 at 1:05 p.m., will feature the MISL USA team, comprising U.S. citizens, versus the MISL International squad, made up of foreign citizens. Players from the United States, Canada, Brazil, Ghana, Croatia, Mexico, Trinidad, Bermuda, Macedonia, Yugoslavia, Ireland, Serbia, and Chile has been selected to the League's showcase event.
In addition to Butcher, the MISL USA squad features St. Louis natives Jeff Davis, of the Kansas City Comets, and Joel Shanker, of the Philadelphia KiXX. Davis starred at CBC High and Saint Louis University (SLU), and is a former member of the St. Louis Ambush of the NPSL and the St. Louis Steamers of the WISL; Shanker was a standout at Parkway Central High School before taking his talents to Indiana University in the early 1990s.
The Baltimore Blast will send the most MISL All-Stars to St. Louis with seven. Six Milwaukee Wave players will appear in the game, along with five Philadelphia KiXX representatives. Four teams (Baltimore, Kansas City, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia) will have players on both the MISL USA and MISL International teams.
The 2004 All-Star starters will be determined by the people, as the MISL gives fans a hand in the voting process for the first time. Beginning on Friday, February 6, followers of the League will be able to visit the MISL's official Web site, www.misl.net, and choose the 2004 All-Star starting lineups. Online voting will end at 11:59 p.m. EST on Sunday, Feb. 22. The starting lineups will be introduced on Thursday, Feb. 26, at the MISL All-Star Welcome Reception, to be held at the Ameristar Casino/Bottleneck Blues Bar in St. Charles, from 5:30 â 8 p.m. CST.
All-Star Coaches will be announced Monday, February 9.
The 2004 MISL All-Star Weekend will take place Feb. 27-29 in St. Louis and will encompass three days of festivities, including:
Feb. 27 â MasterCard MISL Community Day. A daylong program of visits by MISL All-Star and Legends players to hospitals, schools, and other community facilities throughout the region.
Feb. 28 â MISL All-Star Family Festival. A full day of activities at The Family Arena, including the Spalding All-Star Youth Skills competition, youth mini-games, Legends practice, All-Star practice, All-Star Player Skills Challenge, and MISL "Autograph Alley."
Feb. 28 â Commissioner's Celebration of Excellence. A gala charity fund-raiser dinner and silent auction in the Grand Concourse Ballroom of the Renaissance St. Louis Airport Hotel. Funds raised will be shared by the non-profit Steamer Soccer Foundation and St. Louis Variety.
Feb. 29 â 2004 MISL All-Star Game, 1:05 p.m. kickoff at The Family Arena (pregame ceremonies begin at 12:45 p.m.). The world's best professional indoor soccer players take the field in a USA vs. International format.
Feb. 29 â MISL Legends Game, 4 p.m. at The Family Arena. MISL greats from the past take the field in a Steamers Legends vs. MISL Legends competition. Steamers Legends scheduled to participate include Slobo Ilijevski, Tony Glavin, Steve Pecher, Don Ebert, Jeff Cacciatore, Carl Rose, Redmond Lane, and many more.
