The Baltimore Blast will send the most players to St. Louis with seven. Six Milwaukee Wave players will appear in the game, along with five Philadelphia KiXX representatives. Four teams (Baltimore, Kansas City, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia) will have players on both the MISL USA and MISL International teams.
Between the pipes, MISL USA will turn to Baltimore's Scott Hileman, who leads the League with 16 wins, and the ageless Victor Nogueira, who at 42, is fourth in the League in goals against average (4.50), third in minutes played (1,254), and second in saves (263) through February 4. Nogueira has claimed eight consecutive Goalkeeper of the Year Awards (though he shared the honor with Peter Pappas in 2000-01).
Two of the League's top four scorers, Milwaukee's Greg Howes (first with 50 points) and Todd Dusosky (fourth with 37 points), will play on MISL USA's front line. Howes and Dusosky will be joined by first-time All-Stars Steve Butcher of the hometown Steamers (31 points in 20 games) and Giuliano Celenza of the Baltimore Blast (sixth in the League with 19 goals). Veterans Don D'Ambra (fourth in the MISL with 23 goals), Michael King (12th overall with 30 points), Joel Shanker (18 goals), and Paul Wright (27 points in 18 games) round out the MISL USA offense.
The MISL USA defense will feature three of the top four shot-blockers in the MISL in San Diego's Sean Bowers (first with 63), Philadelphia's Pat Morris (second with 46), and Kansas City's Jeff Davis (fourth with 40). Baltimore's well-rounded Danny Kelly and the Milwaukee's sturdy duo of Troy Dusosky and Chris Morman will also man the backline for MISL USA.
Both MISL International goalkeepers, Peter Pappas of Philadelphia and Sagu of Dallas, have recorded shutouts this season (Pappas against San Diego on January 17, and Sagu against Philadelphia on January 25). The blank sheets were the first in indoor soccer since 1999. Pappas and Sagu place in the top three in nearly every major goalkeeping statistic this season.
The MISL International defense will include three first-time All-Star selections: Dallas' Sinisa Alebic, Kansas City's Vlatko Andonovski, and Baltimore's Wendell Regis. Lovelace Ackah (Milwaukee) and Nevio Pizzolitto (Cleveland) will both make their third All-Star appearances, as will reigning MISL Defender of the Year Genoni Martinez (Monterrey). Entering the week, Martinez is the highest-scoring defender in the League with 44 points (second overall) and ranks third with 43 blocks.
The Baltimore Blast trio of David Bascome, Denison Cabral, and Carlos Farias â who have combined for 50 goals and 53 assists this season â highlights the MISL International assault. With Farias (tops in the League with 30 assists) and Philadelphia's Goran Vasic (a first-time All-Star with 23 assists), the International side lays claim to the top two playmakers in the MISL this season. And Cabral, Martinez, and reigning Spalding Scoring Champion and League MVP Dino Delevski (Kansas City) give the squad three of the top five goal-scorers in the MISL.
The 2004 All-Star starters will be determined by the people, as the MISL gives fans a hand in the voting process for the first time. Beginning on Friday, February 6, followers of the League will be able to visit the MISL's official website, www.misl.net, and choose the 2004 All-Star starting lineups. Online voting will end at 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, February 22. The starting lineups will be introduced on Thursday, February 26, at the MISL All-Star Welcome Reception, to be held at the Ameristar Casino in St. Charles, MO, from 5:30 â 8:00 p.m. Central.
All-Star Coaches will be announced next Monday, February 9.
The 2004 MISL All-Star Weekend will encompass three days of festivities designed to celebrate the past, present, and future of indoor soccer. Included in the celebration will be the Spalding All-Star Youth Skills Competition, the MISL All-Star Skills Challenge, the famous MISL Autograph Alley, and The Commissioner's Celebration of Excellence. The All-Star Weekend will culminate on Sunday, February 29, with the League's showcase event, the 2004 All-Star Game, at 1:05 p.m. CST, followed by a Legends Game featuring a galaxy of former indoor greats in an MISL Legends versus St. Louis Steamers Legends format.
