Steamers Lose Farias In Expansion Draft
June 21, 2006 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release
St. Louis Steamers forward Carlos "Chile" Farias was chosen by the Detroit Ignition in the 2006 Detroit Ignition/Major Indoor Soccer League Expansion Draft held via teleconference today. Farias contributed 15 goals and 34 assists as the Steamers compiled the best record in the MISL during the 2005-06 season. He lead the league in assists and was fourth in points (49).
Detroit will join competition in the MISL with the start of the 2006-07 season this fall. Existing MISL teams were allowed to designate nine players, with a maximum of one goalkeeper, as "protected". The Steamers were allowed to protect only eight players due to the conditions of a previous trade.
Steamers head coach Omid Namazi said the club will miss Farias. "Any time you lose a player of that caliber, it will require us to search for a replacement and it won't be easy," Namazi said. "We thank him for his services."
In addition to Farias, Detroit also selected forward Joey Gjertsen and defender Drew Callahan from among the Steamers' pool of available players. St. Louis held the playing rights to both Gjertsen and Callahan through previous transactions. Neither had spent any time on the Steamers' active roster.
Baltimore Blast goalkeeper Sanaldo, California Cougars forward Ricardinho, Milwaukee Wave forward Hewerton Moreira and Chicago Storm defender Matt Johnson joined Farias as Detroit's top five picks in the draft. Namazi said he thought Detroit made some good picks in the draft and "will be very competitive."
